Finding a True Sense of Purpose

At some point, most of us feel a deep inclination to contribute something of value in this life… something that will create some good in the world, and something that will make a mark in some way. These ideas and desires from a mind that is turned towards supporting the collective, and that wants to use this precious life to do so, are beautiful.  But, if this desire is fuelled by a lack of self-worth (which propels the mind to create ideas/projects that would externally ‘prove’ one’s value), it is a wise place to enter into inquiry. Otherwise, we act under the auspices of altruism, when in truth our efforts are engineered to improve our sense of self-worth.

Of course, the result of these efforts may indeed create good in the world, and often do (and I’m not against following up on good ideas in any way!), but in this light, it is easy to see that there could be astronomically more energy, wisdom, creativity, clarity and willingness to truly collaborate when the motivations of the ‘me’ which is always trying to prove its worth (even to itself), defend its position, or maintain/improve it’s image are clearly seen.

The world is ready for your good ideas in action my sweet friends – your unique creativity, talents, passions, gifts and JOY.  So let’s get to the bottom of this ‘me’ thing (and it’s issue with self-worth) once again so we can all freely and fully express whatever bubbles up from our dynamic and creative core – and create some truly transformative and beautiful movements….

I love this point of  inquiry, because the truth is, it is our very nature to be creative and ever-changing.  That’s what we are, that’s what we do.  So if we’ve put limits on how we allow (or disallow) ourselves to express the essence of our very nature, we get stuck, disconnected from our joy, and feel a deep lack of a sense of meaningful purpose.

So here are some questions for you to play with.  But before you dive into inquiry, remember that we can never enter inquiry with the goal of ‘making something go away’… or to ‘change something’… it is to dive right into the centre – fully, without attachment to outcome, or judgement towards what we encounter.  Only then can the truth that burns in the centre of everything be revealed.  So inquiry feels counter-intuitive because we’ve become so deeply conditioned to race in and fix (distract/deny) anything that’s uncomfortable in some way, and here, we can only dive in without the intention to fix/change/heal/make something go away.  Ok?  Ready?

So if this is relevant to you (that you have a burning desire to create something in the world, but you are also aware that it may be linked to a strategy to find and prove your self worth), here are some inquiry questions to play with…. it may be helpful to ask yourself the same question a few times to allow deeper insights to come up.  Don’t search for analytical answers in the mind, just let them bubble up from the truth of your heart.

What do you want to contribute?

Why do you want to do this?

Why else?

What will you gain if this is a success?

What will you gain in terms of  your ‘sense of self’ if this is a success?

What will that give you?

And what will that (above answer) give you? (keep asking this until you feel you’ve arrived at some sense of peace)

Stay with that (sense of peace, freedom from striving, rest, unconditional self love) for a moment, and breathe.  Where is it located? (Is there anything that needs to be externally achieved to prove this?)

Who would you be if this project/action never happens or fails?  (Is that true?  Notice the difference between the mind/identity’s answers and the deeper truth of the heart…)

Is this project the only way you can offer your deepest gifts to the world?

It is really helpful to do this inquiry with someone else (I’d love to work with you!), or to journal the answers. When these questions can be met with a truly open mind (the heart is already open), deeper truths about oneself naturally bubble up to the surface to be seen. First the bubbles of what we’ve held to be true, then the sweetness of feeling them dissipate as they are seen clearly and an even deeper (ever-deeper) truth is experienced.

This particular kind of inquiry has the incredible power to see through even the most subtle tendencies of the ‘me’, allowing ourselves to be liberated from them, again and again and again… until one day we see that the ‘me’ is no longer (and never was) driving.

Once we can really see all the things the ‘me’ has motivated us to do (and we can stop doing them) only then are we truly available to life – and to our deeper intelligence that isn’t motivated by any image or sense of lack. Then we are free to enjoy, create and contribute from a place of peace….just like Papaji said; “Wake up first, and then do what you like!”.

The answers are not in thought

It is amazing how resilient we humans are – we find ways to put up with inner turmoil for decades or lifetimes because we believe it is an inescapable part of being human. Perhaps it is for a while, but at some point, for some of us, there is a deep draw to sincerely dig in and see what’s really under and within all that.  What are we really made of?  If what the teachers say is true, that unnecessary suffering is caused by our thoughts, and we begin to see how much we identify ourselves with (as) our thoughts – how can we meet something beyond that and have a conscious experience of it?

This question drove me for a long long time… and a huge realization occurred for me when I starkly recognized that the answer can’t be found in thought – so stop looking there...  (so if the answer isn’t in thought… what is left?  What is here when you don’t reach into the world of thought? Try this now….)

I had been searching for some ideal of ‘abiding peace’ that I was sure would be linked to a continual state of mind.  It was kind of like dreaming of being in a permanent mental state of savasana after a dynamic yoga practice.  And that is indeed a blissful state of peace… but the peace of savasana is conditional (on a good yoga practice, a quiet room, a soft voice, heck, the lavender eye pillow doesn’t hurt!).  I wanted to find a constant peace that my mind could harmonize with and validate… I wanted the voice of the superego (the voice we unconsciously believe in as our ‘wisest’ moral conscience) to finally say in a deep soothing voice, yes Laura, good work, you are now eternally home in peace…..the heartbreaks of the world won’t affect you anymore…. This was my innocent, child-like dream of what I was hoping to find on the spiritual ‘path’.

But of course, you already know in your heart that it doesn’t quite work like that.  There is no avoiding the heartbreaks of the world… but there is an astonishing discovery to be made – even within the deepest heartbreaks, that can show us that we never left the peace that we are.

The vehicle is a genuine willingness to stop searching within the territory of thought for a solution (or for a ‘way’ to peace) (which is a way of trying to change/fix/avoid reality)… and instead to and simply drop into what is Here (no matter how uncomfortable or terrifying that may initially seem)… and the good news (as Gangaji says) is –

a conscious peace is always waiting. There is nothing else.

But there is a catch, it takes fully committing to this drop.  

That’s the hard part; the plunge that we think might eat us alive or hold us hostage permanently.

That’s the part where I needed help from my teachers and mentors, Cheryl Brewster, Kathryn JefferiesGangaji and Eli. and where I’m now so passionate about supporting others through.  And to be truthful, the plunge has to be taken again and again to break through all those layers of deep conditioning that keep bubbling up.  It isn’t easy – this is why they say a true ‘spiritual path’ is gruelling – it takes a tremendous amount of courage to question what nobody in your world seems to be questioning and then to walk in the truth of your own discoveries.

My love and support to you who are sincerely asking these questions and who are mustering the courage to take this plunge.  While you might be feeling vulnerable, confused and disoriented at times, (as you move from the ‘known’ into the ‘unknown’) you are actually powerful wayshowers – who are no longer perpetuating the deep layers of conditioning that have dictated so much about how the world as we know it has to operate… your courageous step towards living consciously (by seeing through and therefore dismantling the power of conditioning within your own experience first), is what will allow the fullness of your being to come forth, which naturally bears the gifts of creative insight, compassionate action and a calm heart full of joy.

Embracing our humanity

For years, I spent a lot of time fighting my thoughts, emotions and habits.  I was constantly either trying to quiet them, avoid them, or re-direct them.  In my pursuit of spiritual growth, things like negative thinking, bad moods, judgemental thoughts and my frequent post-lunch handful of chocolate chips seemed so ‘unspiritual’. At the time, I was certain that these aspects of myself confirmed for me that I wasn’t actually serious about spirituality right to the core.

Now I see it differently.  I see that the ultimate acceptance and experience of Self starts with embracing, not denying, all aspects of our humanity. In other words, we must give ourselves permission to fully see (admit) and accept everything that is coming up in our inner (and outer) experiences – all our moods, habits, thoughts, judgements, without judgement.

We are so used to judging the things that come up that we’ve decided are ‘ugly’ aspects of ourselves, that we cut ourselves off from the profound experience of seeing what they really are.  We hold the deep assumption that these things are part of who we actually are –  and most of us are afraid/dislike what they indicate about us, so we try to fix, resist or deny them.  (Or we use them to create roles-the victim, the martyr, etc.)

What if instead of stomping on all these things the instant they peek up into our experience, we allowed them to grow – full bloom?

Most of us think that if we don’t step in and try to fix/address anxiety, depression or anger as soon as it announces its presence, it will just get bigger and bigger and quickly swallow us whole.  But what if that isn’t true.  What if we just gave these things space to come up, and bloom.  So we don’t take any action that suppresses, or that expresses them either – we give them the space to unfold and we simply watch what they do.

Something big started to shift in my own ‘sense of self’ when I started doing this with the things I’d deemed so negative that appeared in my mental and emotional experiences. When I was finally willing to drop the drama and just get genuinely curious about them, and watch without interfering with the full unfolding of their expression – I found that I truly wasn’t locked into them or tyrannized by them in the way I had been before.

I saw that I wasn’t actually attached to them at all – they were just doing their thing within me – and even when they were extremely intense, I saw that they didn’t actually mean anything about the essence of who/what I am ~  that was just a belief/assumption I’d previously held.  I was somehow absolutely untouched by even the most intense unfolding of these movements.

It takes willpower of a new ilk; it takes the strength to see these things appearing and not do anything to change the way or fact that they are here.  

Once I started doing this, my attitude towards arising emotional and mental patterns started to change.  A sincere curiosity, and even fascination towards them all seemed to cultivate itself and overtake the frustration I used to feel when they came up.

It feels a bit crazy – because we have conditioned ourselves so deeply to use all kinds of strategies to ‘cope’ with our ‘darkness’ (**which are wise and needed in many cases – this inquiry is for when one is ready to really open to something deeper), the mind may scream at you for not doing anything – it may feel like admitting defeat.  But in my experience, this is again only the mind – the very persuasive voice of the mind that knows which fearstrings to pull to try to make you move.  Stay still and see what happens.  This is a profound way to experiment with these intense movements of emotional and mental energy….

Only you can find out what actually happens when you start to fully embrace (rather than deny) all aspects of your gorgeously messy humanity.
